The original map (see explanation below) has been “dismembered” into townships with inserts of the town centers & outlying areas and reassembled into a 12″ by 17″ Mapbook by Jostens and reproduced by the Historical Society. Fascinating for genealogists and historians, it also contains the timeline by which the various townships and towns were formed – an invaluable tool to researchers. An example from the table is found below:

LAND OWNERSHIP MAPS
The maps produced by commercial publishing houses in the nineteenth century are a rich and fascinating source of genealogical material. They locate residences and note owners’ names on the face of the maps. Their proper name rather than land ownership is cadastral. Webster defined cadastral as pertaining to a cadastre; and in turn defines cadastre as “An official register of the quantity, value and ownership of real estate used in approtioning taxes.”
Very few counties were fortunate enough to have had cadastral maps in the eighteenth century. But two New Jersey counties, Somerset and Middlesex, had maps drawn as early as 1766 by Lt. John Hills, a British Army officer. Hills used surveys made by Benjamin Morgan and Az. Dunham.
Both Virginia and Pennsylvania passed legislation early in the nineteenth century to have State sponsored country maps compiled. A few were completed by 1825. Torrey’s map of Pike County, Pennsylvania was finished by 1816. He used a method of inscribing the owners’ boundaries and assigning numbers on the face of the map rather than writing in the owner’s names, similar to the present-day tax maps in New Jersey. Other than these scattered efforts at mapping, very few others were printed prior to 1850.
However, by the mid nineteenth century, a market had developed in the northeast for commercially produced maps. The Library of Contress listed only 28 maps in the 1840’s, but 327 county maps by the 1850’s. They were an awkward five feet by six feet, printed on paper and mounted on canvas as wall hangings, frequently varnished. An ordinary run would be about 1000 copies.
This Hopkins map of Sussex County, New Jersey, shows grist and saw mills, school houses, wheelright, blacksmith and paint shops, lime kilns, roads, streams as well as residences and their owners. We are fortunate that Hopkins chose to favor us with his careful work.

This document is an alphabetical listing of all the names which occur on the 1860 Map of Sussex County in New Jersey produced by G.M. Hopkins, Jr., C.E. Each name is presumably associated with a house or other building such as a shop or mill. The name is supposed to be the property owner, and most have been confirmed from deed or census records.
Each entry has four sections, separated by commas:
The last name of the owner.
The first and middle names of the owner. The portions enclosed in brackets are not present on the Map, but have been added by the compiler, based on deed or census records.
The map section where the building associated with the name is located.
Generally “homestead” or “rental”; an underlined name on the Map indicated rented property; otherwise, it is assumed to be homestead. This field also contains any other descriptor which appears on the Map such as “Mrs.” Business descriptors are included only when they are clearly associated with the name.
